Deal with Heartbreak

Priyanka approached the counselor with issues dealing with a recent heartbreak. Priyanka was 23 and was dating a boy who belonged to her native place in Himachal and worked in the same company on the same project. She lived alone in Noida as a paying guest and was working since the last two years. The counselor was appointed by her company as part of an EAP service and visited the company twice a week.

The heartbreak was particularly difficult for Priyanka as she was finding it difficult:

  • To come to work and work alongside her now, ex-boyfriend.
  • She was unable to concentrate and was making silly mistakes in her work.
  • She was battling loneliness, negative thoughts, and low moods on the personal front.
  • She didn’t want to meet her old friends and avoided going out on weekends.
  • Her team leader had recently warned her serious damage to her upcoming appraisal.

In the first four sessions, the counselor and Priyanka addressed her depressive mood. She was helped to stop ruminating over negative thoughts and focus on positive ones with the help of cognitive tools. She was further equipped with enhancing cognitive and behavioral tools to face her ex-boyfriend at work. The counseling focus was then shifted to more permanent aspects of elevating her mood and analyzing her relationship patterns. This helped Priyanka to understand herself better as a person and also to work on her other estranged relationships.

Priyanka now occasionally meets the counselor for more enhancing and self-awareness driven coaching to help her live a fulfilling life.
